Valentina rests at a reception centre for Ukrainian refugees, in the village of HorodÅ?o in eastern Poland, close to the Ukrainian border. The reception centre is a school gym that has now been repurposed as a transit centre where Ukrainian refugees who cross at the border a few kilometres away, can rest, shower and get a warm meal before they are taken by bus to other cities across Poland. Valentina, 67, arrived one day ago. She had polio when she was 9 months old, which left her partially disabled. She uses a wheelchair for mobility.
Here is her story: People helped carry me to Poland, from point to point. My trip took 3 days. I am waiting for my daughter who lives in Israel to come here today and take me back to Israel with her. She arrives tonight in Warsaw.â? â??I fled my home because I was terrified. Russian fighting destroyed my town. I left my nephew behind in my flat- he couldnâ??t come as he has organ failure. When the Russians started fighting I hid in my bathtub. I donâ??t know why the Russians targeted my city, there is nothing strategic there, only citizens. I saw a lot of injured people in the street. They were targeting us, the civilians. My town is just a normal town, why would they want to bomb us? Here in Poland I now feel safe, I have seen a doctor and I have been given medicine for the pain. In this place I have everything I need: food and someone to take me to the toilet. My birthday is on the 31 Match. My wish? I have grandchildren but I want to have a great grandchild! My other wish is for the war to end, for peace to come. I am so thankful for the help I have received here?
The physical and mental health challenges of migration are significant. Carry a basic first-aid kit and essential medications. Stay hydrated, eat whenever possible, and get enough rest. Prepare for different climates and extreme weather conditions by packing appropriate clothing. Be aware of the nearest healthcare facilities and seek medical attention if needed. Mental health is equally important, so reach out to support groups and counselors if you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Many organizations provide healthcare specifically for migrants. Migrate Right can guide you on how to prepare for health risks and connect you with healthcare services along your route.
